Replacing the CV boot in a Citroën AX (1993)

My first, and favorite car is the Citroën AX. Mine is from 1993, and way older than me. I brought it to the periodic inspection and it was rejected because one of the CV boots had torn. The constant velocity joints have a dust cover to prevent dirt from entering and destroying the joint. The garage told me it would cost 125 euros to replace the broken cover; so I decided to do it myself.

A picture of my torn cover, and the other (good) one look like this. Notice the grease that was flung out of the hole:

Replacing the CV boots is not too difficult, but it does require some dedicated tooling to stretch the new cover over the joint. I have one that is similar to this one. But before you can use the tool with a “very human design”, you need to remove the drive shaft from the wheel.

The new CV boot

The new set that I bought can be see in the picture above. As you can see, its slightly different from the faulty cover. This is because there are many different aftermarket covers that fit a range of cars. But this doesn’t come too tight, and the citroën AX has plety of space to allow for different covers. The new cover also comes with the necessary clamps and grease.

The following images show my process of removing the drive shaft:

And then; its time for tool with a the very human design~! the images can be seen below:

All in all it only took me a couple of hours! Usually it takes me way longer to do any work on my car. This has been a pleasant suprise! And it saved me a ton of money.
